Newfoundlands are comparable to giant teddy bears! They are playful yet very sweet and love to cuddle. These dogs have excellent temperaments and are very intelligent. Newfies are extremely loyal and become very attached to their owners. They are also very family friendly dogs and are safe around young children. Furthermore, Newfies are easily acclimated to both house life and outside life, although they should have a large space to run around and get exercise due to their large size. Newfoundlands can range anywhere between 90-170lbs!
Grooming a Newfie can be tricky because of their thick, double layered coat. If kept indoors, their coat should be groomed weekly for minimal shedding. I recommend getting them professionally groomed at least twice a year. Newfies tend to shed there undercoat twice a year in the spring and fall. On average, male Newfoundlands grow to 28 inches tall and 130-150 pounds in weight. Females grow to 26 inches tall and 100-120 in weight.
Furthermore, because of their uniquely designed webbed paws, Newfoundland’s were originally bred as working dogs and water dogs to retrieve nets for fishermen or to save drowning victims. Therefore, they should have a ready source of water to drink and play in! Newfoundlands love the water!
